Budget Travel Tips for Europe

Apr 5, 2026

Europe has a reputation for being expensive, but it doesn't have to be. Millions of backpackers, students, and savvy travelers explore the continent every year without spending a fortune. The key is knowing where your money goes and making smarter choices at each step.

Getting Around Cheaply

Flights within Europe can be absurdly cheap if you book with budget airlines like Ryanair or Wizz Air. The catch is baggage fees — pack everything into a personal item or small backpack to avoid paying more for your bag than your seat. Book at least 4-6 weeks ahead for the best fares.

Buses are often cheaper than trains. FlixBus connects hundreds of European cities with fares starting under 10 euros. Overnight buses double as free accommodation for a night. If you prefer trains, consider a rail pass only if you're covering long distances across multiple countries — otherwise point-to-point tickets bought in advance are usually cheaper.

Where to Sleep on a Budget

Hostels remain the gold standard for budget travelers. Expect to pay 15-35 euros per night in most Western European cities, and significantly less in Eastern Europe. To save more, consider these alternatives:

  • Couchsurfing — free stays with locals who enjoy hosting travelers
  • House-sitting platforms — watch someone's pet or plants in exchange for a free place to stay
  • Camping — Europe has well-maintained campgrounds, and some countries allow wild camping
  • University dorms — many rent rooms to travelers during summer months

Booking.com and Hostelworld often have last-minute deals, especially midweek when demand drops.

Eating Well Without Overspending

Restaurant meals in tourist areas are budget killers. Instead, shop at local supermarkets and markets for breakfast and lunch supplies. A baguette, cheese, and fruit from a French market costs under 5 euros and beats most restaurant lunches. Save dining out for dinner, and look for spots where locals eat — a side street two blocks from the main square usually serves better food at half the price.

Many European cities offer free walking tours (tip-based), free museum days, and gorgeous parks that cost nothing to enjoy. Research each destination's free offerings before you arrive, and you'll find that the best experiences in Europe rarely require a ticket.
