Overpacking is one of the most common mistakes travelers make. Dragging a heavy suitcase through airports, train stations, and cobblestone streets turns what should be an adventure into a workout. The good news is that packing light is a skill anyone can learn with the right approach.
Start With the Right Bag
Your bag dictates how much you bring. Choose a carry-on sized backpack or roller (around 40-45 liters) and commit to making everything fit inside it. When you have less space, you naturally make better decisions about what to bring. Avoid expandable luggage — it just tempts you to fill the extra room.
Compression packing cubes are worth every penny. They organize your clothes by category and squeeze out dead air so shirts and pants take up about half the space they normally would.
The Capsule Wardrobe Method
Pick a neutral color palette — black, navy, grey, khaki — and pack pieces that all mix and match with each other. A solid approach for a week-long trip looks like this:
- 3 tops (one dressy, two casual)
- 2 bottoms (one pair of jeans or chinos, one pair of shorts or a skirt)
- 1 light jacket or layering piece
- 5 pairs of underwear and socks
- 2 pairs of shoes maximum — one walking shoe, one sandal or dressier option
- 1 swimsuit if needed
Wear your bulkiest items (jacket, boots) on the plane instead of packing them. This single move saves a surprising amount of luggage space.
Toiletries and Extras
Toiletries are where most people waste space. Buy solid shampoo and conditioner bars — they last longer than liquids and don't count toward your liquid allowance at security. Decant sunscreen and moisturizer into small silicone tubes rather than bringing full-size bottles.
Skip the "just in case" items. You probably won't need three books, a hair dryer, or a full first aid kit. Most hotels provide basics, and pharmacies exist everywhere. If you discover you truly need something at your destination, buying it locally is part of the experience.
Roll your clothes instead of folding them. Rolling reduces wrinkles and lets you see everything in your bag at a glance, which means less rummaging and repacking throughout your trip.
